Entryway Revamp Continued: Bring in the Green

After moving the mailbox and painting the door, I wanted to add a little more substance and symmetry to our entryway.

I’ve been dying for months to add some tall planters flanking the door and this weekend I finally made it happen.

I picked up two of these planters from Lowe’s:

allen + roth 14″x16″ black resin planters, $16.67 each, and two Kimberly Queen ferns for $10.98 each. I planted them using some potting soil and compost I already had on hand and popped them on either side of the door.

Ummm, love. I was a little worried that the resin planters would look cheap, but I think that the black is actually a really nice contrast and relates back to the mailbox. And those ferns are just the perfect shade of green against the yellow/white/blue color scheme. I’ve still got some work to do before the porch is exactly how I want it, but I feel like the entryway area is coming along nicely. And there’s still more to come! I was so productive while Nick was gone!

You know, it’s strange. I used to spend a lot of time outside because I smoked. When I quit last November I worried that I wouldn’t ever sit on our porch anymore. But I find that the more I work to make this an attractive and inviting space, the more compelled I am to come sit out here for a bit each day, even if it’s just to play around on my phone or read a magazine. Fresh air just for the heck of it = awesome. Of course, the temperature is still pretty moderate here (yesterday was actually sorta chilly!). We’ll see how much time I’m spending outside uncoerced come July. The ugly ceiling fan on our front porch that I always hide in pictures will be working overtime!
